One of our favorite actors right now is Michael Fassbender, who has been wowing international audiences with his varied performances in FISH TANK, THE DEVIL’S WHORE, Francois Ozon’s ANGEL, HUNGER, and Quentin Tarantino’s INGLORIOUS BASTERDS.

This weekend, his newest film hits theaters: CENTURION, an intense, violent historical tale of Roman soldiers lost in the wilds of early AD Northern Britian, struggling to survive against fierce local warriors. Fassbender holds his own during brutal battle scenes that any fan of GLADIATOR, 300, or SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND will enjoy immensely.

But for us ladies in the audience, some of Fassbender’s future projects hold much more promise to thrill and entertain. Let’s take a look at what is coming up for this smart, intense, German-by-way-of-Irish actor…

Michael Fassbender and Dominic West, who share the screen in CENTURION, previously appeared together in the powerful 2008 UK television miniseries THE DEVIL'S WHORE.

This week you can catch INGLORIOUS BASTERDS on cable, CENTURION in theaters (and coming to DVD/BluRay November 2), and HUNGER on Netflix Instant Watch. Unfortunately ANGEL is not available in the US on DVD or VOD, which is a true shame.

For us Fassbender junkies there is also plenty more to come:

Earlier this spring, he filmed the lead role of Mr. Rochester in Cary Fukunaga’s reworking of the classic novel JANE EYRE, co-starring Mia Wasikowska (ALICE IN WONDERLAND) and featuring a great supporting cast: Dame Judi Dench, Jamie Bell, Sally Hawkins. The release date is currently set for March 2011.

He is currently shooting David Cronenberg’s new film A DANGEROUS METHOD, from a script by Christopher Hampton (ATONEMENT, DANGEROUS LIASONS). Here Fassbender plays fledgling psychiatrist Carl Jung, opposite Viggo Mortensen as Jung’s mentor, Sigmund Freud. Keira Knightley co-stars as a woman who comes between these two men. Photos of the actors on set, and a bit of video with German narration, have surfaced during shooting recently. This film does not yet have a distributor (and therefore, no announced release dates); but with this pedigree we can hope hard for plenty of film festival play — and eventually some sort of release.

Sigmund Freud & Carl Jung, in life and on film. If anyone can make this captivating, it is David Cronenberg.

Next up: this fall shooting commences on the new X-Men comic book film, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, to be directed by Matthew Vaughn with a script developed by Bryan Singer and the writers of THOR and KICK-ASS. Fassbender is co-starring with James McAvoy here, the two playing 20-something versions of the characters that Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart have portrayed previously (Magneto and Professor X, respectively). Joining them, as per usual in the X-MEN franchise, is a varied and impressive supporting cast including Rose Byrne (DAMAGES) as Moira MacTaggert, Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw, Edi Gathegi (TWILIGHT) as Darwin, Jason Flemyng as Azazel, Oliver Platt as The Man in Black, and January Jones (MAD MEN) as Emma Frost.

Later in the fall Fassbender will be co-starring in the next project from director Tomas Alfredson (LET THE RIGHT ONE IN) — a new adaptation of the John Le Carre novel TINKER, TAILER, SOLDIER, SPY. Yet again there is a great cast: Gary Oldman, Colin Firth and Ralph Fiennes. Hopefully this action thriller will be on a fast track to come out in 2011.

Already in the can and announced for a January 2011 release is Steven Soderbergh’s HAYWIRE, an action spy thriller with Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, Michael Angarano, Mathieu Kassovitz and Bill Paxton. Pretty incredible lineup, eh?

Jim Jarmusch (BROKEN FLOWERS, DEAD MAN) has recently revealed a planned project that would star Fassbender, Tilda Swinton, and JANE EYRE’S Mia Wasikowska. WOW. We wait, we hope…such is the life of the Jarmusch fan.

This October, Xbox releases FABLE 3, a game featuring voicing by Fassbender, along with Simon Pegg and Stephen Fry. The game previewed this summer at the E3 conference — and gamer girls will apparently enjoy it, as this preview piece attests.

IMDB also has our man listed in two other film projects; there are few details, so for now consider them rumors – BIRDSONG, and AT-SWIM-TWO-BIRDS.

We broads here at FemmeBot are not the only ones paying such close attention to Mr. Fassbender — Cinematical beat me to this post by a day, as it turns out — but he is absolutely one of our favorite actors right now. Keep an eye out for all these films…

Unfortunately for us SAMCRO hoodlums of the world, the FX network and the Comic-Con Powers That Be chose to cram two different FX shows, SONS OF ANARCHY and IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA into a single hour of con programming — and the IASIP panel also included the surprise screening of an entire new fall episode, which was great, but LONG.

Because of this both panels were regrettably short, with precious little time for in-depth discussions or fan questions. Nevertheless, for a first time appearance at the con, Gemma and her boys from the bike club did just fine and had some terrific moments. Hopefully these folks will be back at SDCC, or at the Paley Center, again soon to give us more. Meanwhile I see by my twitter feed that many journalists are now receiving screener DVDs of the season three premiere, and are over the bike shop about it… Season three of SONS OF ANARCHY premieres on FX September 7th.

A few things I really enjoyed durings SONS: the new Season 3 trailer above (which got a big cheer), a hilarious fan question about THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, Ron Perlman showing big love for his Mercedes over his bike, Katey Sagal confirming Gemma will be massively BAD-ASS this season, and Kurt Sutter revealing that we will see a bit more backstory for Gemma and John this year, with plans in future seasons to reveal a lot more about what happened between Gemma, John, and Clay.

The GLEE panel today was a bit shorter than many fans would have liked, due to Fox’s mystifying decision to show 20 minutes of show clips beforehand. Nevertheless, fun was had by all. The panel was surprisingly deep and often serious, but everyone had plenty to say, especially show creator Ryan Murphy, who talked quite a bit about what is coming in season 2 — including a Rocky Horror Picture Show themed episode of all things! (Btw on the SIMPSONS panel earlier in the weekend, Matt Groening said the cast of GLEE will be visiting the show this season too.)

Guests on the panel were executive producers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, and castmembers Chris Colfer, Jenna Ushkowitz, Kevin McHale, Amber Riley, Heather Morris, and Naya Rivera.

The San Diego Comic-Con panel for SyFy’s CAPRICA was as usual a thoughful and in-depth delight for the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA fan faithful. Panelists Ron Moore, David Eick, Sasha Roiz, Alessandra Torressani, and James Marsters all had plenty to say. Moore and Eick were cagey about a renewal for season 2, but Moore seems very hopeful, adding that at this point it was mainly a case of the network going through the detailed budget and planning, to confirm it can happen. Let’s hope he is right.

Before the panel there was a terrific full trailer for season 1.5, which debuts on SyFy this coming January 2011. In a pretty unusual move SyFy is holding this footage for a Comic-Con promotion with Zune/XBox — so apparently only you folks with an XBox can see it right now. Hopefully SyFy will eventually share it with the rest of us. ETA: the trailer is now on youtube:

Now whenever Ron Moore starts comparing Caprica to the show Dallas, his producing partner David Eick will start doing tequila shots. Well played yet again, Eick.

The lines for the TV room Ballroom 20, were massive yesterday in expectation of terrific panels from TRUE BLOOD, BIG BANG THEORY, CAPRICA and Joss Whedon.  Crowds to get in were so intense in the morning that the fire marshall actually shut the line down completely for a while, not even allowing us to queue up till things simmered down. Lucky for me and you, I got in OK thanks to a bit of quick thinking from a wonderful friend (you know who you are girl!), and taping commenced.

HBO showed us an AMAZING trailer for the back half of season 3 before the panel, and were nice enough to put it online right away last night, per below. There is so much going on in this trailer that fans will need to discuss at length (come over to our sister site, TrueBloodTV, and chat it out girls)…

The time has arrived my little nerdettes, and we are now just a day away from San Diego Comic Con (or as the twitter kids refer to it, #SDCC). The schedule has been out for over a week now, and I hope all of you who are attending have made your list [...]]]> by ProgGrrl

The time has arrived my little nerdettes, and we are now just a day away from San Diego Comic Con (or as the twitter kids refer to it, #SDCC). The schedule has been out for over a week now, and I hope all of you who are attending have made your list and checked it twice. For the rest of you, there will be many ways to track what is going on at con — to start with why don’t you bookmark my twitter, my Comic-Con attendee twitter list, and The FemmeBot’s Delicious bookmark feed.

What follows is a run down of much of the SDCC stuff The FemmeBot will be tracking and I personally will be trying to attend and if possible videotape to share here in the coming weeks. I am a lone girl, wandering in the packed, sweaty smelly halls of the con, and can’t be everywhere at once. But this list below should give you an idea of where I will be camped out and what sorts of videos and news you can expect us to cover.

We are also going to try to Ustream a couple of panels this year on Friday. This is our Ustream channel. Bookmark it for use later…

Surely the most heartbreaking news for us here at The FemmeBot was discovering that all of our number one fanbroad priorities, the TRUE BLOOD, Joss Whedon, SPARTACUS, and BEING HUMAN panels, are all basically happening at the same time on Friday afternoon. A tough choice will have to be made. Oh the humanity! After recovering from a week-long malaise about this, which only got worse after realizing the ROBOT CHICKEN and ARCHER panels are also happening during that busy timeframe, a calm head prevails. Obviously, it has to be TRUE BLOOD and Joss this year.

In the rooms or not, The FemmeBot will certainly collect every bit of nifty news and video we can find about all the events we care about. Keep watching.

A few more notes about the “WhedonVerse” track: fans of Joss Whedon’s work over the years often find it reassuring, long after one of his beloved shows is axed due to early underappreciation, to follow the post-Whedon careers of his actors and crew. SDCC provides an unheard-of cornucopia of current and former Team Whedon folks to gather, chat, and be loved by the fans. The Whedon track at SDCC this year is getting especially dense, as you can see from Bix’s list. With several hours of Joss himself on stage this year, hopefully we will hear plenty about his new gig directing THE AVENGERS, interesting casting for that film, and the future of his currently-shelved MGM film CABIN IN THE WOODS.

We Whedonites should keep our eyes out on Thursday night especially: there are rumors spreading that Joss and several other folks we recognize might be stopping by parties or the SERENITY and DOCTOR HORRIBLE screenings going on that evening.

FILM: MEGAMIND
Tina Fey and Will Ferrell on a stage together trying to make us all giggle. The possibility that Brad Pitt might also show up. What more do we need, really?

FILM: DANNY ELFMAN
The man, the legend! Elfman founded the seminal LA band Oingo Boingo, and is best known for his half-a-lifetime long collaboration with Tim Burton on the scores for most of his films. Sure to be a great hour.

FILM: TRON LEGACY
The TRON camp came out early this year, announcing a huge panel and major SDCC presence once again. Word is that Flynn’s Arcade is back. Keep your eyes peeled for viral and other fun shenanigans. Also: Michael Sheen, FemmeBot favorite, is on this panel.

What more do I need to say other than: Helen Mirren and Angelina Jolie. At Comic-Con. Thursday is pretty much all about camping out in Hall H for me, where I will be trying to shoot some videos for you all. Today is a good Fanbroad day in here: we also get Michelle Rodriguez on the BATTLE LOS ANGELES panel — and Lady Mirren will be sitting onstage with Mary-Louise Parker, Warren Ellis, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and John Malkovich. How can that not be worth seeing?

BOOKS / TV: CHARLAINE HARRIS
Unfortunately you have a big choice to make midday here: leave Hall H for Harris’ solo panel to discuss her Sookie Stackhouse books and other works… or stay in Hall H and camp out for the Abrams/Whedon panel later in the day? You will have one other chance to see Harris on a panel of paranormal novelists on Saturday — but for this hour she is up there solo.

TV / FILM: THE VISIONARIES – J.J. ABRAMS & JOSS WHEDON
The penultimate TV nerd meeting of the minds. It hasn’t even happened yet and it is already legendary. Believe me, as you are reading this, the line to get into this panel has probably already begun forming.

Bang! Puff! Pop! Splat! The only bag I need to get this year is Showtime's.

TV: THE SHOWTIME ANTI-HEROES
It is a big heartbreak that this panel — featuring WEEDS’ Mary-Louise Parker and showrunner Jenji Kohan, CALIFORNICATION’s David Duchovny and showrunner Tom Kapinos, NURSE JACKIE showrunner Linda Wallem, and DEXTER’s Michael Hall and showrunner Chip Johannessen — conflicts with Whedon/Abrams. Please videotape it for me, dear social cloud?

TV: CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) and a bunch of equally silly people discuss this goofy web series that has recently begun airing on Adult Swim. Very likely to be a comedy highlight of the week.

CULTURE: SCI-FI THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE
Most of the folks who write all the great stuff for the io9 web site are on this panel, along with Bonnie Burton from StarWars.com and writer Douglas Wolk. Sure to be a geeky, entertaining hour.

BOOKS: KISS THEM OR KILL THEM?
A whole panel-ful of urban fantasy and paranormal romance authors discuss their craft. A good alternative if you can’t attend the Charlaine Harris earlier today.

CULTURE: GEEK GIRLS EXIST
Join a bunch of super cool geek ladies as they discuss The Nerdgirl Nation. These chicks are also having a tweetup Friday night.

The very charming Sasha Roiz, the giddy foxy Alessandra Torresani, and the geek broad superstar James Marsters, along with BSG masterminds Moore & Eick, will gather to discuss our favorite BATTLESTAR GALACTICA spinoff. But will there be news of season two renewal? Frak knows.

The show’s prequel miniseries SPARTACUS: GODS OF THE ARENA (airing early 2011) has some new cast, and season two is also in production; thanks to star Andy Whitfield’s full recovery from his bout with non-Hodkin’s lymphoma, the show’s second season will shoot this year, to air in late 2011.

FILM/TV: WOMEN WHO KICK ASS
EW hosts this all-badass-ladies panel including Jena Malone (SUCKER PUNCH), Anna Torv (FRINGE), Elizabeth Mitchell (V), and Ellen Wong and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD).

TV: ROBOT CHICKEN
Seth Green and his band of freaks are always a hilarious, R-rated highlight of any con they attend. If you are not in the TRUE BLOOD line, get yer ass over there.

This hilarious show is bound to provide a hilarious panel. It is up against some seriously tough competition, and it’s therefore a shoe-in that you’ll get a seat in this room.

One imagines this panel will include a guest appearance by Joss Whedon for THE AVENGERS… but what about this rumor that they will also unveil the entire cast of the film on stage? Whoa.

FILM/TV: HER UNIVERSE – SHINING THE SPOTLIGHT ON FEMALE FANS
Finally, a geek lady panel that doesn’t have to compete against 50 other super-high-profile things. If I’m not ready to collapse at this point, I’ll be there.

Looking at science fiction through female eyes, the panel will discuss what kinds of entertainment female sci-fi fans want to see more of, what strides have been made, what has been missing up to now, what kinds of merchandise female fans want to see, and what female fans can do to encourage more of all of this. A very mellow day, a day to relax. But also a day for a few more excellent TV panels. While The FemmeBot doesn’t cover CASTLE, SMALLVILLE or SUPERNATURAL, the cast/crews of these shows will be there for you fans. Meanwhile we will be focusing on these other panels…

TV: GLEE
This year the Glee folks decided to bring all the cast who didn’t come to Con in 2009 — which means the showrunners Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk will be joined by Chris Colfer, Jenna Ushkowitz, Kevin McHale, Mark Salling, Heather Morris, and Naya Rivera this time around. Fun! But sorry, no Jane Lynch, sigh.

Really wish I'd gotten this in time for SDCC...

TV: SONS OF ANARCHY & IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA
These SDCC first-timers from the FX Network are sharing a one-hour session. Awesome, funny, special, etc, etc. WE WILL BE THERE.

TV: MERLIN
This British import, which is currently shooting their third season, is having its first ever SDCC panel. Finally Anthony Head at con! Has it ever happened before? Did he do it for Buffy?

Other Random Awesomeness

At the last minute we’re getting a lot of tidbits about other things to look out for on the showroom floor and around town. Here is today’s sampling; keep an eye on my twitter feed for more.

• Bob Stencil is back. I hope I get to meet him and take a photo!

• Though HBO is now insisting to the press that they do not plan on showing any new GAME OF THRONES footage at con, we have heard some rumors that they will still have some presence for the show. Keep your eyes peeled.

• Don’t forget that Morgan Spurlock, documentary filmmaker (SUPERSIZE ME, 30 DAYS, FREAKONOMICS) is turning his camera on the SDCC culture, shooting a film about the fans and the scene. This film is co-produced by Stan Lee, Joss Whedon and Harry Knowles, who will all be in town. I don’t know how much time Spurlock will have for tweeting about it, but he’s promising to be “tweet-tastic”! Also follow @ComicConPhoto and maybe get your cosplay into the accompanying book project.

• A trade paper article out yesterday says Fox Home Entertainment is building hibernation chambers on the Nostromo spaceship from ALIEN that displays virtual reality imagery from the film series, to promote its upcoming ALIEN anthology Blu-ray.

• For the new film BURIED, you can get yourself shut in a coffin and get a video of their claustrophobic experience to email or post on Facebook. If that’s your bag and all. (Booth 3729)

• The incredible folks from WETA, a “five time Oscar winning conceptual design and physical manufacturing facility servicing the world’s entertainment and creative industries,” will be sharing a booth with Dark Horse Comics, to show off their newest prop recreations and other exclusive merchandise.

• There will be a Pop-Up Threadless Tees Shop in downtown San Diego. Worth a shopping trip!

• If you oversleep one day and miss half your favorite panels, fear not!
